On a day that should have been filled with celebration and pride, tragedy struck in Richmond, Virginia, leaving a family and community in mourning. Just moments after walking across the stage to receive his high school diploma from Huguenot High School, 18-year-old Shawn Jackson was shot and killed. The joyous occasion on June 6, 2023, turned into a scene of chaos and horror outside the Altria Theater, where the graduation ceremony had just concluded. Gunfire erupted in Monroe Park, an open space near the theater, sending graduates and their families scrambling for safety.
Caught in the same hail of bullets was Shawn's 36-year-old stepfather, Renzo Smith, who had been there to proudly watch his stepson graduate. Both Shawn and Renzo sustained fatal injuries in the attack. The shooting also left five other people, ranging in age from 14 to 58, wounded by gunfire. In the ensuing panic, Shawn's nine-year-old sister was struck by a car but fortunately only sustained minor injuries.
The violence that cut short two lives stemmed from a long-running dispute, according to police. Investigators believe the shooting was a targeted attack. The suspect, identified as 19-year-old Amari Ty'Jon Pollard, allegedly knew Shawn Jackson and their conflict had been escalating for over a year. It is believed that Pollard attended the graduation, had an interaction with Shawn, and then retrieved a handgun from his vehicle.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, police took two individuals into custody. One was later determined not to be involved. Amari Ty'Jon Pollard was arrested and has since been charged with two counts of second-degree murder. He is being held without bond as the investigation continues, with the possibility of additional charges being filed. The community was left to grapple with the senseless violence that turned a milestone achievement into a devastating loss for the families of Shawn Jackson and Renzo Smith.
