In the late summer of 2018, a dispute escalated to a fatal conclusion for a Richmond, Virginia man. Michael Allen, a 41-year-old Black male, was shot and killed on August 26, 2018, in the city's Church Hill neighborhood. The events that led to his death began with a rap battle, a contest of lyrical skill that would tragically end in violence.
Richmond Police were called to the scene between two apartment buildings where they discovered Allen suffering from a gunshot wound.
He was transported to a local hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal. The investigation that followed uncovered a story of a rap competition that had taken a dark turn.
Investigators identified Keith L. Epps as the suspect in Allen's death. According to court documents, Epps had lost the rap battle to Allen and had taken offense to a disparaging comment Allen made about a woman Epps was seeing. This insult festered, and later that same day, Epps confronted Allen and shot him in the chest.
Epps was subsequently arrested and faced charges of murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. In July 2019, the legal proceedings came to a close when Keith Epps was convicted of second-degree murder. He entered an Alford Plea, a plea in which the defendant does not admit guilt but acknowledges that the prosecution has enough evidence to likely secure a conviction. Epps was sentenced to 15 years in prison for the killing of Michael Allen.
