In the early morning hours of Saturday, June 20, 2009, a life was tragically cut short on the streets of north Memphis. James G. Wilson, a 39-year-old Black/African American man, found himself in a fatal altercation that would leave him mortally wounded. The incident occurred around 2:45 a.m. near the intersection of Life Avenue and Thomas Street, in an area just north of the old Firestone plant.
Officers from the Old Allen Station were the first to respond to the scene, where they
discovered Wilson lying in the street with a gunshot wound. He was quickly transported to the Regional Medical Center, but his injuries proved too severe, and he died shortly after his arrival. Witnesses at the scene reported that Wilson had been involved in some sort of dispute with an unknown individual just before the shooting.
After the single, fatal shot rang out, the suspect fled the scene on foot, disappearing into the darkness of the Memphis morning. Investigators at the scene were able to recover Wilson's vehicle, which had been left behind. While the exact circumstances leading up to the shooting remain unclear, authorities believe that robbery may have been the motive behind the violent encounter.
James Wilson's death was recorded as the 61st homicide in Memphis for the year 2009. Despite the initial investigation and the accounts of witnesses, no arrests have ever been made in connection with his murder. The identity of the person responsible for his death remains a mystery, and the case has grown cold over the years, leaving his family and friends without answers or a sense of justice for their loss.
