An argument at a Memphis apartment complex on the evening of March 14, 2024, ended in the fatal shooting of Jay Hamm, a 34-year-old white man. The incident took place in the Parkway Village neighborhood, at the Oakridge Apartments on Wingood Circle.
Memphis Police Department officers responded to a call just before 7 p.m. and found Jay Hamm suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest.
He was transported to Regional One Health in extremely critical condition, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries and died at the hospital.
The investigation quickly centered on an individual who had been in a dispute with Hamm just before the shooting. According to a witness, who identified himself as Hamm’s brother, Hamm had been involved in an argument with a man he knew as “Bookie.” The witness told officers that after the argument, his brother sat down on a milk crate. At that point, the man known as Bookie allegedly pulled a gun from his pocket and fired a shot at Hamm.
Based on the witness's account, police identified the suspect as Antonio Patton. The witness was able to positively identify Patton as the man who shot his brother. Authorities located and arrested Patton.
Antonio Patton was charged with murder in connection with Jay Hamm’s death. His bond was set at $250,000. As of March 2024, the case is proceeding through the legal system.
