In Memphis, Tennessee, on the Fourth of July in 2015, Quincy Jett, a 35-year-old Black male, was shot and killed. He was inside his vehicle at the Forrest Pine Apartments, located in the 1500 block of Stribling Road in East Memphis, when the fatal incident occurred. Jett sustained 13 gunshot wounds in the attack. The violence of the act sent ripples through the community, prompting a thorough investigation by law enforcement.
The case eventually led to the identification of two teenage
suspects, Kyle P. Baptiste and Markavias Gray, who were both 16 years old at the time of the shooting. More than a year after Jett's death, the U.S. Marshals Task Force apprehended Markavias Gray in Memphis in November 2016. The following month, Kyle P. Baptiste was arrested in Violet, Louisiana, near New Orleans, and was subsequently booked into the Shelby County jail. Both teenagers were charged with first-degree murder in the perpetration of robbery.
According to court documents, the motive for the deadly encounter was connected to a drug deal involving the purchase of a quarter ounce of marijuana. The investigation was aided by crucial witness testimony. One witness reportedly saw the shooting and captured it on a cell phone, later identifying Baptiste from a photo lineup. Another witness claimed to have overheard Gray discussing his and Baptiste's involvement in the killing.
