In a tragic turn of events stemming from a social media post, a 60-year-old man lost his life in Memphis, Tennessee. Nazario Garcia was fatally shot on November 24, 2019, in the parking lot of a Raleigh shopping center. The incident was set in motion when Gjuandell Effinger alleged on social media that a man in a white van had attempted to abduct her at a Walmart.
She included video of Garcia's white panel truck, his license plate, and his location.
Responding to their mother's social media claims, her two sons, Favian Effinger, 26, and Miguel Effinger, 21, proceeded to the shopping center on Austin Peay Highway. The brothers, arriving in separate vehicles, confronted Garcia as he exited a store. Witnesses reported that the Effinger brothers opened fire on Garcia with both a shotgun and a handgun. Garcia attempted to flee in his van but ultimately crashed. When police arrived, they found him near his truck with multiple gunshot wounds to the front and back of his body. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two days after the shooting, Favian and Miguel Effinger were taken into custody by police. Their mother, Gjuandell Effinger, 50, was also arrested. In June 2020, a grand jury indicted the two brothers on charges of first-degree murder. Gjuandell Effinger was indicted on a charge of solicitation to commit first-degree murder. The investigation concluded that Nazario Garcia was mistakenly targeted by the family.
