In the winter of 2015, in the city of Memphis, Tennessee, a man's life was cut short in a violent encounter that stemmed from a dispute at a nightclub. John Jones, a 53-year-old African American male, was fatally shot on the front porch of a residence on McMillan Street in the southern part of the city on December 23rd. The events that led to his death began with an altercation over a woman, a seemingly minor conflict that would ultimately have deadly consequences.
The investigation into
the shooting uncovered a murder-for-hire plot. Authorities determined that Jones, who was believed to have connections to the Memphis Mob street gang, was the intended target of a pre-meditated attack. The ensuing police work led to the identification and apprehension of those responsible for carrying out the killing.
Two individuals were ultimately brought to justice for their roles in the death of John Jones. Raymon Muhammad, who was 21 years old at the time of the incident, was arrested and charged with the murder. Prosecutors successfully argued that Muhammad was the triggerman in the plot, having been paid $1,000 and a cell phone to kill Jones. A jury found Muhammad guilty of first-degree murder, and he was subsequently sentenced to life in prison. Another man, 37-year-old Derrick Matthews, was also implicated in the scheme. Matthews pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit first-degree murder and received a 20-year prison sentence for his involvement.
