On a summer evening in Memphis, Tennessee, the life of 53-year-old William R. Chillis, a Black male, was irrevocably altered. On June 30, 2023, at approximately 6:20 p.m., a knock came at the door of his home in the 2100 block of Wilson Road. When Chillis answered, he was met with gunfire. His wife, Machelle, who was working from home at the time, heard the shots and rushed to the entryway to find her husband suffering from gunshot wounds to his head and mouth.
