On December 26, 1997, 38-year-old Patrolman Don Williams of the Memphis Police Department was moonlighting as a security guard at a local comedy club. Earlier in the evening, he had ejected a man from the club. The man returned later that night and opened fire on Officer Williams at point-blank range with an unknown caliber handgun.
