In the summer of 2020, the life of Mack C Bond, a 58-year-old male and a veteran firefighter of over two decades with the Memphis Fire Department, was brought to a tragic and abrupt end. On July 15, while off-duty at Kennedy Park in Memphis, Tennessee, Bond was fatally shot. His body was discovered in the driver's seat of his SUV, which had crashed into a wooded area across from the park.
Investigators believe he was attempting to flee his assailant when he was shot.
The investigation into the shooting led police to two individuals, Carlton Wells, 23, and his girlfriend, Danielle Mack, then 38. The pair were in a rented car in the park when Bond pulled up beside them. According to Wells' confession to investigators after waiving his Miranda rights, Bond propositioned the couple for sex. Wells claimed this made him feel uncomfortable, leading him to shoot Bond multiple times. After the shooting, the couple fled the scene.
Two days after the incident, both Wells and Mack were arrested. In October 2020, a grand jury indicted Wells on charges of second-degree murder and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. Danielle Mack was also indicted on a felony charge of tampering with evidence. It is alleged that after the shooting, she drove their rental car to a Memphis car rental agency and exchanged it for another vehicle, failing to report the shooting to the authorities. The case was designated to be handled by the District Attorney's Special Prosecution Unit, which seeks maximum sentences for repeat felony offenders.
