Patrol Driver John H. Ryan of the Memphis Police Department was tragically shot and killed on March 19, 1910, while attempting to apprehend a wanted fugitive in an alley on South 4th Street between Calhoun Avenue and St. Paul Avenue. Ryan and two other officers were on duty at a police substation when they received information about the fugitive's location. Upon arrival, the officers split up to draw the suspect out, leading to a chase that ended with the suspect opening fire, killing Ryan.
