In the early morning hours of December 16, 2023, the life of one-year-old Leo Amir Weathers was tragically cut short in a drive-by shooting in the Frayser neighborhood of Memphis, Tennessee. The young male was inside a home on Wellons Avenue when the shooting occurred.
Emergency services responded to the scene around 2 a.m. and found shell casings on the concrete. Leo was rushed to Regional One Health in critical condition but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
His mother, Leaundra Dockery, described her son as a happy, smart, and handsome baby, expressing her profound grief and disbelief over the loss of her child.
The death of Leo Amir Weathers added to a record-breaking year for child gun violence in Memphis, a somber statistic that has alarmed medical professionals and the community alike. Doctors at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital reported treating over 170 children for gunshot wounds in 2023, surpassing the previous record set in 2021.
