In the Garfield neighborhood of Pittsburgh, a violent encounter on a Wednesday evening in January 2013 tragically ended the life of 27-year-old Michael Andrews of the East Hills. The incident, which unfolded in the 5300 block of Browns Way, is believed by authorities to have been an attempted home invasion.
According to police reports, the events began to spiral when a masked individual knocked on the door of a residence where two men were inside playing video games. As one of the occupants answered the door, the intruder immediately opened fire, striking him. The second man inside the home retrieved a firearm and shot the masked intruder, who was later identified as Michael Andrews.
Andrews sustained gunshot wounds to the head and trunk and was transported to a local hospital where he later died. The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office officially ruled his death a homicide. The two men who were inside the home were also wounded in the exchange of gunfire and were taken to the hospital for treatment.
In the aftermath of the shooting, police recovered multiple weapons from the scene and began an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attempted robbery and subsequent homicide. Authorities publicly identified Andrews through his fingerprints and appealed to the community for any information regarding the incident as they continued their search for at least one other person believed to be involved. At the time of the initial reports, no charges had been filed in connection with Andrews' death.
