On March 16, 2021, the life of Daoyou Feng, a 44-year-old female of Chinese descent, was cut short in a burst of violence that stunned the nation. She was working at Young's Asian Massage in Acworth, Georgia, having been employed there for only a few weeks. Feng had no family in the United States, and her relatives in China were unable to travel to her, leaving her tragically isolated in her final moments and the immediate aftermath of her death.
The day of the shooting, a 21-year-old
man named Robert Aaron Long began a rampage across the metro Atlanta area, targeting three separate spas. His first stop was Young's Asian Massage. After entering the establishment, he opened fire. Hearing the commotion, Feng poked her head out of a room and was fatally shot. She was one of four people killed at that location, and one of eight victims in the devastating spree that spanned from Cherokee County to the city of Atlanta. The attack sent waves of fear and grief through the community, particularly among Asian Americans, as six of the eight victims were women of Asian descent.
Robert Aaron Long was apprehended by law enforcement later the same day. During questioning, he claimed to be motivated by a sex addiction that was in conflict with his religious beliefs. For the killings in Cherokee County, which included Daoyou Feng, Long pleaded guilty to four counts of murder. He was sentenced to four consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole, plus an additional 35 years. The prosecutor in this jurisdiction did not pursue hate crime charges.
However, the legal proceedings were far from over. In Fulton County, where the subsequent shootings took place, the district attorney is pursuing the death penalty against Long. The prosecution there has filed notice of its intent to seek hate crime charges, arguing the attacks were racially motivated. This separate case has faced numerous delays and is still in the pretrial phase, leaving a final sense of justice pending for the families of the other victims. In the wake of the tragedy, with no family present, the local Chinese American community came together to organize a funeral for Daoyou Feng, ensuring she was mourned and laid to rest with dignity.
