Charles Gamble, a 43-year-old Black man from Birmingham, died on March 4, 2011, after a night of violence at what police described as the Homefront Social and Savings Club, an illegal after-hours spot operating behind a house on 5th Place in Pratt City. In the telling that emerged weeks later, the place was crowded with drinking, dancing, and the kind of tension that can build quietly before it suddenly breaks. Gamble was reported to have gotten into a fight inside the club, left for a short time with his girlfriend, and then returned to the scene before gunfire erupted. His death was later confirmed in a published obituary from Birmingham.
What made the case murkier was the account police shared afterward. Then-Birmingham Police Chief A.C. Roper said witnesses indicated Gamble came back armed and began shooting at people inside the club. According to that version, someone else fired back, and police believed the fatal shot may have been fired in self-defense. Even with that possibility on the table, investigators did not present the killing as closed or fully explained. They said they still needed to determine exactly who fired the shot that killed Gamble and whether the full story had been uncovered.
