In the late hours of a June evening in a Homewood, Alabama, soccer complex parking lot, a chain of events unfolded that would end the life of 18-year-old Jabari Latrell Peoples. A uniformed police officer, citing an increase in criminal activity in the area's athletic complexes, approached the vehicle where Peoples and his girlfriend were sitting. The officer reported smelling marijuana, which prompted him to ask both individuals to exit the car.
