Elijah Ethaniel Romero was a young man with a tender, generous, and kind heart who brought laughter and joy to his family. The 19-year-old male loved people deeply and cherished spending quality time with his family and those he loved. Born on September 15, 2007, in Lakeland, Florida, Elijah moved to the Kansas City metropolitan area at the age of 10 with his mother, Ciera, his father, Oswaldo, and his brother, Ian. His grandmother and uncle soon followed. Elijah had a passion for cars, music, and cooking, and was known as an avid shoe collector with a keen sense of fashion and style. He also engaged in deep conversations about his faith and shared his hope in Christ with others.
The final moments of Elijah’s life ended in violence in the early morning hours of Sunday, November 1, 2026.
At approximately 1:15 a.m., officers from the Kansas City, Missouri, Police Department were dispatched to the area of 29th Street and Penn Valley Drive in Penn Valley Park after reports of a shooting. When they arrived at the scene, they found Elijah suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The officers immediately began performing life-saving measures until emergency medical personnel arrived.
Elijah was rushed to a local hospital, but his injuries were too severe, and he was pronounced deceased. As police were processing the scene in the sprawling urban park, which is home to the Liberty Memorial Tower and Museum, they learned that two other men had arrived at area hospitals with gunshot wounds believed to be related to the same incident. One of the men was in critical condition with life-threatening injuries, while the other was listed as stable with non-life-threatening injuries. The shooting was one of several homicides that occurred in Kansas City over the Halloween weekend.
The Kansas City Police Department’s homicide detectives and crime scene personnel responded to Penn Valley Park to collect evidence and search for any available witness statements. Investigators worked to identify any subjects of interest or other individuals who may have been involved in the shooting. However, police did not release any preliminary information indicating what may have led to the gunfire, and no suspects were immediately taken into custody.
The investigation into Elijah Romero's death is ongoing. His family, including his parents, Ciera and Oswaldo Romero, and his siblings, Isaiah, Trista, Ian, Kylie, and Micah, were left to mourn their profound loss. A visitation and funeral service were scheduled to be held on Wednesday, November 11, 2026, at Ascend Church in Olathe, Kansas. In his memory, his family requested that donations be made to Pawsitive Tails Dog Rescue in honor of Elijah.
As of early November 2026, no arrests had been made in the case. The Kansas City Police Department and Elijah’s loved ones are still seeking answers. Authorities have asked that anyone who was in the area and heard or saw anything to come forward. A reward of up to $25,000 is available for information submitted anonymously to the TIPS Hotline. Anyone with information is urged to contact the homicide detectives directly at 816-234-5043 or the Greater Kansas City Crime Stoppers TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).
