On December 8, 2016, police in Kansas City, Missouri, were dispatched to a residence in the 3900 block of Chestnut Avenue following reports of a shooting. Inside the home, officers discovered the bodies of two men who had sustained fatal gunshot wounds. The victims were identified as 54-year-old Jonathan Echols and 52-year-old Freddie Jones. Investigators determined that the double homicide was the result of a robbery gone wrong, as the men were targeted for marijuana and firearms believed to
be in their possession.
According to witness statements provided to law enforcement, two teenagers had gone to the residence with the specific intent to rob the occupants. The victims reportedly allowed the young men into the home, unaware of the impending danger. Once inside, the situation escalated violently. Witnesses described a chaotic scene in which one of the suspects allegedly unleashed gunfire using an AK-47 assault rifle, striking both Jones and Echols multiple times and resulting in their deaths.
Authorities subsequently identified and arrested two suspects in connection with the slayings. Tyren Lamar, who was 17 years old at the time of the incident, faced serious charges including two counts of first-degree murder, one count of first-degree robbery, and three counts of armed criminal action. A second suspect, 18-year-old Seth S. Reed, was also taken into custody and charged with two counts of second-degree murder, first-degree robbery, and three counts of armed criminal action. Prosecutors requested high bonds for both defendants as they moved forward with the legal proceedings for the violent crimes that claimed the lives of the two men.
