On the afternoon of March 31, 2025, a violent disturbance erupted in the Robandee South neighborhood of Kansas City, Missouri. Police officers were dispatched to the 9800 block of Marsh Avenue around 2:00 p.m. following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, first responders discovered two individuals suffering from gunshot wounds in front of a residence. One of the victims was identified as Derrick DeWayne Rhodes, a 32-year-old male, who was found unresponsive alongside his fiancée, Aminah C.
Johnson. Both victims were urgently transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, but despite medical efforts, they were pronounced dead later that afternoon.
Derrick Rhodes was a Kansas City native, born to parents Reginald J. Rhodes Jr. and Christy Watkins. He was a 2011 graduate of Ruskin High School and had pursued further education in Mechanical Engineering at Longview Community College. Known for his charismatic smile and passion for working on cars and playing basketball, Derrick had built a career working for the City of Kansas City Water Department and later with Martin Trucking and Total Wine. He was a devoted father to his daughter, AiLani, and was expecting another child with Aminah at the time of their deaths.
The investigation into the double homicide revealed that the shooting likely stemmed from an interpersonal dispute. Detectives determined that the victims and the suspect were acquaintances, with family members describing the shooter as someone the couple had considered a friend. The argument reportedly escalated into gunfire outside the home. Shortly after the incident, police took a man into custody at the scene as a person of interest. However, he was subsequently released pending further investigation due to insufficient evidence at that time. As of the initial reports following the incident, no formal charges had been filed, though detectives continued to investigate the tragic loss of the couple and their unborn child.
