On the night of September 1, 2026, the small community of Warm Springs, Georgia, was rocked by the sudden and violent death of 36-year-old Sergeant Chris Fisher. Just before midnight, while sitting in his patrol car in the parking lot of the Meriwether Country Inn on Spring Street, Sgt. Fisher was ambushed. He had just completed an unrelated traffic stop when another vehicle, a black Chevrolet Silverado, pulled up alongside him. The driver, later identified as 23-year-old Jimmy Lee Steverson of Warm Springs, fired multiple shots into the patrol car, striking and killing Sgt. Fisher at the scene. The attack was swift and left the community in shock.
The investigation into Sgt. Fisher's murder quickly revealed a chilling connection between the officer and his killer. Just days prior, on August 27, Sgt. Fisher had arrested Steverson on charges that included felony marijuana possession and obstruction. Body camera footage from the arrest showed a contentious encounter that escalated into a physical struggle. An arrest warrant alleged that Steverson had struck Fisher in the face during the incident. Steverson was released on a $10,000 bond, a freedom that would prove to have tragic consequences. Following the shooting, a Blue Alert was issued as law enforcement began a widespread manhunt for Steverson.
The search for Jimmy Lee Steverson came to an end the following day in Anderson, South Carolina. On September 2, deputies with the Anderson County Sheriff's Office conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in which Steverson was a passenger. As law enforcement approached, they discovered Steverson with what was later determined to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased, closing the criminal case before it could ever reach a courtroom. Sgt. Fisher, a U.S. Army veteran and father of two, had served with several law enforcement agencies in Georgia, including the Heard, Fayette, and Meriwether County Sheriff's Offices, before joining the small Warm Springs department, where he had been recently promoted to Sergeant. His death, an apparent act of retaliation, cut short the life of a dedicated officer and left a family and community to grieve a profound loss.
