Lane Templeton, a 31-year-old White/Caucasian man, was fatally shot in Sparks, Nevada, during the early morning hours of September 20, 2026. At approximately 5:20 a.m., officers with the Sparks Police Department were dispatched to the 4500 block of Pyramid Peak Circle after multiple callers contacted 911 to report a shooting. When officers arrived, they found Templeton suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Police and emergency personnel provided medical aid before he was transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

The shooting immediately became the focus of a homicide investigation. Detectives began working to determine what had happened in the moments leading up to the gunfire and quickly identified Jonathan Marquez-Rodriguez as the primary suspect. Authorities have not publicly disclosed what evidence led investigators to Marquez-Rodriguez, nor have they released a detailed account of the confrontation or events that allegedly preceded Templeton's shooting. Police also had not announced a motive or publicly explained whether Templeton and Marquez-Rodriguez knew one another.

Investigators continued searching for Marquez-Rodriguez throughout the day. Later on the evening of September 20, officers located him at an apartment complex in the 1400 block of Vista Del Rancho in Sparks. He was taken into custody without incident, only hours after Templeton had been shot. Marquez-Rodriguez was subsequently booked into the Washoe County Jail on charges that included open murder and assault with a deadly weapon.

Jail information reported the following afternoon indicated that Marquez-Rodriguez remained in custody and listed bail at $20,000 at that time. His arrest represented the first major development in the investigation, but it did not resolve many of the circumstances surrounding Templeton's death. Authorities had not publicly detailed the type of firearm involved, the number of shots fired, whether the shooting occurred inside or outside a residence, or what investigators believed caused the encounter to turn deadly.

As of the latest publicly available reporting, the Sparks Police Department continued to describe the investigation as open and active. No trial or conviction had been reported, and the allegations against Marquez-Rodriguez remained pending rather than proven in court. Investigators continued seeking information from anyone who might have witnessed the shooting or had knowledge of the events surrounding Templeton's death.
