On the morning of October 21, 2013, a sense of normalcy filled the air at Sparks Middle School in Sparks, Nevada, as students gathered before the first bell. Among them was Michael Landsberry, a 45-year-old male math teacher and a respected military veteran. This ordinary morning would soon turn tragic, forever marking the lives of those present. Shortly before classes were set to begin, a 12-year-old seventh-grade student named Jose Reyes opened fire on the school's basketball courts with a
9mm Ruger semiautomatic pistol he had brought from his home. The first shots struck a 12-year-old student in the shoulder.
As chaos and panic erupted, Landsberry, a former Marine who had served in Afghanistan, did not hesitate to act. He calmly walked toward the young shooter, putting himself directly in the line of danger in an attempt to de-escalate the situation and protect the students. Eyewitnesses reported that Landsberry raised his hands and tried to persuade Reyes to put down the gun. His selfless actions gave many students precious moments to flee to safety. Despite his attempts to reason with the boy, Reyes shot Landsberry in the chest, fatally wounding him.
After shooting Landsberry, Reyes fired at and wounded a second 12-year-old student who had moved to help the fallen teacher. The boy suffered an injury to his abdomen. Following this, Jose Reyes turned the gun on himself, taking his own life. The entire incident unfolded in a matter of minutes, leaving a community in shock and mourning. Because the sole suspect died by suicide at the scene, no arrests were made in connection with the shooting itself.
