In the small town of Pageland, South Carolina, the life of 16-year-old Zaden Christian Bratsos was tragically cut short on the evening of Saturday, March 28, 2026. A junior at Central High School, Zaden was known for his infectious smile and kind nature. He was a beloved son, brother, and a true friend to many who knew him. He was active in his community, working at both Polly's Ice Cream and The Ball Theatre.
That Saturday evening, Chesterfield County Sheriff's deputies responded to a
call on North Pearl Street, where they found Zaden suffering from a gunshot wound. He was rushed to Atrium Health in Monroe, where he succumbed to his injuries. Investigators later determined that the shooting had occurred at a different location, near CW Baker Circle, and that multiple people were involved in the incident.
In the days that followed, the small community was gripped by the senseless violence. The Chesterfield County Sheriff's Office launched a thorough investigation, which quickly led them to identify a suspect. On the Wednesday following the shooting, 17-year-old Jeremiah J. Lockhart turned himself in to the authorities.
Lockhart was taken into custody at the Chesterfield County Detention Center and has been charged with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. Due to the severity of the charges, he will be tried as an adult under South Carolina law. While an arrest has been made, the investigation into the shooting that claimed Zaden's life remains ongoing, with the possibility of additional charges being filed as more information comes to light.
