Shanquella Pigram, a 38-year-old female from Chicago, died on March 30, 2026, after a late-night fight inside a home in the East Garfield Park area turned deadly. The shooting happened around 9:40 to 9:45 p.m. in the 2800 block of West Washington Boulevard, where police said an argument between two men quickly escalated into violence.
According to reports, 44-year-old Machillo Freeman and a 31-year-old man became involved in a physical fight inside the residence.
During the confrontation, Freeman allegedly pulled out a knife or sharp object and attacked the younger man. The 31-year-old, who police said had a valid Firearm Owner’s Identification card, then drew a gun and fired multiple shots. Freeman was struck several times.
Shanquella was not described as the person who started the confrontation. Instead, police said she was caught in the chaos while trying to intervene. As the gunfire erupted, she was shot in the head. Both Shanquella and Freeman were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
A firearm was recovered at the scene. The 31-year-old gunman was taken into custody after the shooting, and early reports said charges were pending while detectives reviewed the circumstances. Public reports available at the time did not identify him by name, and no later public update was found confirming formal charges, trial proceedings, or a conviction.
The case appears to have centered on a violent confrontation that spiraled inside the home rather than a random attack. Shanquella’s death was especially tragic because she was reportedly trying to step into the middle of the altercation when she was fatally shot. What began as a dispute between two men ended with two people dead, an armed man detained by police, and investigators left to determine whether the shooting would be treated as criminal, self-defense, or some combination of both under Illinois law.
