In the early hours of a Tuesday morning in DeKalb County, Georgia, a tragedy unfolded that would end the life of 50-year-old Tywarn Jones. The initial call to authorities on April 7, 2026, came in at approximately 3:06 a.m., reporting a person shot on Interstate 285 southbound, near the Glenwood Road exit. When officers arrived, they discovered Jones suffering from grave gunshot wounds.
He was immediately transported to a nearby hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal.
As the investigation commenced, it became clear that the incident had not originated on the busy interstate. Instead, detectives traced the events back to the 5500 block of Marbut Road in Lithonia. It was there, during a heated argument, that Tywarn Jones was shot. Investigators believe that Jones was acquainted with the person who shot him. Following the shooting, a witness at the scene drove Jones away from Marbut Road and onto I-285, where they stopped to call for help.
The investigation quickly led to a suspect, and on Thursday, April 9, 2026, 45-year-old Anessa Burton was taken into custody. She has been charged with malice murder in connection with the death of Tywarn Jones. Following her arrest, Burton was booked into the DeKalb County Jail, where she is being held without bond. The case against her is currently pending in the legal system.
