In the summer of 2023, a young man’s life was tragically cut short during his shift at a local restaurant in Lithonia, Georgia. Sixteen-year-old Jacob Johnson was working at the IHOP on Panola Road on July 15th, a job he had taken to earn money for a new wardrobe before starting his junior year at Martin Luther King Jr. High School. Described as a hard-working and ambitious teenager, he had dreams of becoming a lawyer.
The events that led to his death began to unfold just before noon when Jakari Childs, then 16, arrived at the restaurant looking for his ex-girlfriend, who was a coworker and close friend of Jacob's. All three teenagers attended the same high school. Jacob alerted his friend to Childs's presence. When the young woman went outside to ask Childs to leave, he fired a single, fatal shot that struck Jacob in the head as he stood beside her. Jacob was rushed to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the shooting quickly identified Jakari Childs as the suspect. He turned himself in to the DeKalb County jail and was subsequently arrested. A grand jury indicted Childs on multiple charges, including malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. The community, shocked by the senseless act of violence, rallied around Jacob's grieving family, holding a candlelight vigil and setting up a fundraiser to help with funeral expenses.
In June 2025, a DeKalb County jury found Jakari Childs, by then 18 years old, guilty of all charges. He was later sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole, plus an additional six years to be served consecutively. The conviction and sentencing brought a measure of closure to Jacob Johnson's family, who remembered him as a kind and beloved son with a bright future ahead of him.
