In the late days of March 2023, a dispute on Kelly Street in Lithonia, Georgia, turned fatal for a young man. The life of 21-year-old Torey Shepherd, a male, was cut short on March 29th when an argument spiraled into a deadly shootout. The exchange of gunfire left Shepherd with fatal injuries, bringing a tragic end to what began as a disagreement. The motive behind the initial confrontation has not been released by investigators, leaving a void in the understanding of what led to the violent encounter.
In the wake of the shooting, law enforcement began their investigation to piece together the events that transpired and to identify who was responsible for Shepherd's death. Their efforts led them to a residence on Laguna Drive in Decatur. It was there, on April 4th, that the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office Fugitive Unit apprehended a suspect in connection with the fatal incident. The man taken into custody was identified as 42-year-old Kali Smith of Lithonia. His arrest occurred without incident.
Following his capture, Kali Smith was charged with malice murder and aggravated assault for his alleged role in the shooting that killed Torey Shepherd. He was subsequently transported to the DeKalb County Jail, where he is being held without bond. The case against him is now proceeding through the legal system, as the community grapples with the violent loss of a young life.
