Brionn Arronjaae Orr, a 25-year-old man from Birmingham, Alabama, was shot late on April 7, 2026, in the city’s Kingston community, in the 4600 block of Roscoe Avenue. Police said the first warning came shortly before midnight, when officers were sent to the area after a ShotSpotter alert. As officers were responding, they learned that Orr had already been taken from the scene to UAB Hospital by private vehicle.
Investigators said the shooting happened during a physical argument.
Orr survived long enough to reach the hospital, but the injuries were fatal. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified him and reported that he was pronounced dead at UAB Hospital at 12:31 a.m. on April 8, 2026. What began as an argument on Roscoe Avenue became a homicide investigation before the night was over.
In the days after his death, Orr’s family described the loss as sudden and devastating. A memorial fundraiser organized by Syreeta Orr said he was “taken from us far too soon” and remembered him as funny, loving, hardworking, and family-oriented, someone who brought joy to the people around him. The fundraiser was created to help cover funeral and burial expenses, including clothing, a casket, the funeral service, burial plot, and headstone.
Birmingham police quickly identified a suspect. Dearrius Woods, 27, of Birmingham, was taken into custody on April 7 without incident, according to police. By April 9, authorities announced that Woods had been charged with murder in connection with Orr’s death. Police said Woods was expected to be transferred to the Jefferson County Jail.
The killing drew added attention because it happened in the same block of Roscoe Avenue where another man had been fatally shot about a month earlier. Authorities continued asking anyone with information to contact the Birmingham Police Department’s Homicide Unit or Crime Stoppers as the case moved forward from the initial arrest into the court process.
