In the quiet community of Flat Rock, North Carolina, the life of 18-year-old Izabella Gamez was tragically cut short on the night of April 27, 2026. A recent graduate of North Henderson High School, Izabella was known for her vibrant spirit and dreams of becoming an esthetician. Her sudden and violent death left her family, friends, and the entire Henderson County community in a state of shock and grief.
The events that led to her untimely passing unfolded at the Dana Community Park, where a pre-arranged fight between a group of young women took a fatal turn.
The Henderson County Sheriff's Office responded to a call of a shooting at the park at 11:26 p.m. Upon their arrival, deputies discovered Izabella with a gunshot wound. She was rushed to a local hospital but succumbed to her injuries. The investigation quickly revealed a grim sequence of events. According to the Assistant District Attorney, 18-year-old Sheilah Tong had driven 19-year-old Leron Monteith to the park where the fight was scheduled to take place.
During the altercation, Monteith reportedly brandished a handgun. After the initial fight concluded, he is alleged to have fired seven shots into the air, followed by three more shots directed towards a car where Izabella and two other young women were standing. One of these bullets tragically struck and killed Izabella. Another bullet hit the trunk of the car, and a third entered a nearby home. Following the shooting, Tong allegedly drove Monteith away from the scene to his mother's residence.
In the days that followed, the Henderson County Sheriff's Office arrested both Leron Monteith and Sheilah Tong in connection with Izabella's death. Monteith was charged with first-degree murder. At the time of his arrest, he was already awaiting trial on unrelated charges, including possession of a stolen vehicle and "going armed to the terror of the public". Sheilah Tong was charged with accessory after the fact to murder. Both suspects were initially held at the Henderson County Detention Center without bond. The community mourned the loss of a young life full of promise, as those responsible for her death began to face the legal consequences of their actions.
