On January 7, 2024, at approximately 4:30 p.m., Winston-Salem police responded to a reported shooting on Hartfield Circle. Upon arrival, officers discovered 44-year-old Kia Scheron Ramseur suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite prompt medical attention, Ramseur succumbed to her injuries, marking the city's first homicide of the year.
Investigations revealed that Ramseur had previously been in a domestic relationship with 44-year-old Bryant Stephen Horne.
On the day of the incident, Horne arrived at Ramseur's residence, and following a verbal altercation, he fatally shot her. Approximately 17 minutes after the shooting, police apprehended Horne on Everidge Road. He was subsequently charged with general murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Horne was denied bond and was scheduled to appear in court on January 8, 2024.
Ramseur was a graduate of East Forsyth High School's Class of 1998 and furthered her education in Computer Engineering at Forsyth Technical Community College. She worked as a benefits administrator and was known for her passion for natural beauty products, often creating her own blends of oils and sea moss. She cherished spending time with her daughter, creating lasting memories. Her unexpected passing has left a profound void in the lives of her family and friends.

Events such as the Domestic Violence Survivors Forum have been held to raise awareness and provide support to victims, urging the community to take a stand against such acts and offer a haven for those in need.
