A quiet Thursday morning in the Bronx was shattered by violence on March 26, 2026, leaving a young man dead. 21-year-old Assam Alshaif was found unconscious and unresponsive near the intersection of Jerome Avenue and Bainbridge Avenue. He had sustained a gunshot wound to the head.

Police from the 52nd Precinct responded to a 911 call at approximately 9:48 a.m. and discovered the gravely injured Alshaif. Emergency medical services rushed him to St. Barnabas Hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced deceased. The area, located next to the Woodlawn subway station and across from Woodlawn Cemetery, was quickly cordoned off by police as they began their investigation, a backpack and a pool of blood marking the tragic scene on the sidewalk.

In the immediate aftermath, the investigation moved swiftly. A person of interest was taken into custody the same day. Later that evening, at 8:00 p.m., police formally arrested 18-year-old Jadore Reid of the Wakefield section of the Bronx. Reid has since been charged with murder, manslaughter, and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon in connection with Alshaif's death. According to one witness, a man was seen running from the scene and into the Woodlawn subway station before coming back down and attempting to board a bus, where he was then apprehended by police. The investigation remains ongoing.
