In the Bronx, a dispute that began inside a deli escalated to a fatal encounter on the night of September 24, 2018, claiming the life of 46-year-old Sylvester Paul. The altercation started at approximately 10:30 p.m. inside a deli on East Gun Hill Road, where Paul and another man, identified by police as 38-year-old Tony Clark, were involved in a physical fight.
The conflict moved from inside the establishment to the sidewalk in front.
At one point, Clark allegedly got into a black SUV and attempted to run Paul over by driving onto the sidewalk. Paul managed to avoid being hit, and Clark drove away from the scene. The respite was short-lived, as Clark is reported to have returned to the same location about an hour later, at 11:30 p.m. He confronted Paul again, this time allegedly shooting him in the chest.
After being shot, Paul ran back into the deli seeking help. He was transported to Jacobi Medical Center, where he ultimately died from his injury. In the aftermath of the shooting, the New York Police Department identified Tony Clark as the suspect and sought public assistance in locating him. At the time of the reports, no arrests had been made in connection with the homicide. Clark was described as a Black male, 6'1' tall, and weighing 180 pounds, and was known to frequent the Port Morris, Mott Haven, and Melrose areas of the Bronx.
