Bryant Howard Peney, a 27-year-old white male, was a dedicated patrolman with the Fort Lauderdale Police Department. On the night of January 5, 1996, while on duty, he attempted to stop a suspect hiding in a bush along a highway. During the ensuing foot chase, the suspect turned and fired a handgun at Patrolman Peney. The bullet struck his arm, nicked his vest, and ultimately entered his chest. Despite being rushed to surgery, Peney succumbed to his injuries at 3:54 AM on January 6, 1996.
