In the borough that pulsed with life, a young man's future was abruptly extinguished. Omar Sepúlveda, a 20-year-old male from the Bronx, New York, was fatally shot on the evening of August 11, 2021. The incident unfolded inside a residential building on Creston Avenue, where police responded to a call of an assault at approximately 7:11 p.m. Upon their arrival, they discovered Sepúlveda in the hallway, unconscious and unresponsive, with three gunshot wounds.
Emergency medical services rushed him to Saint Barnabas Hospital, but his life could not be saved, and he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting led to an arrest the following month. On September 13, 2021, the New York Police Department took 29-year-old Roberto Guzman into custody in connection with Sepúlveda's death. Guzman, an East Harlem resident, was subsequently charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon. This was not just a random act of violence; the two men were cousins, and reports suggest a simmering animosity between them.
Family members indicated that the conflict may have escalated over a dispute involving money and a damaged vehicle. According to Sepúlveda's father, his son was a positive and happy individual who was a new father himself. The elder Sepúlveda stated that his son was protecting his own infant child from Guzman when he was tragically shot. At the time of the incident, Guzman was reportedly on parole for a prior attempted assault. Following his arrest, he was held without bail at Rikers Island.
