On the afternoon of Sunday, March 15, 2026, a young man's life was tragically cut short in the parking lot of a Belleville, Illinois, shopping center. Montavion Conrad, a 20-year-old resident of Belleville, was fatally shot around 3:50 p.m. in the 5800 block of Belleville Crossing. He was an employee at the Qdoba restaurant located in the strip mall where the incident occurred. First responders found Conrad with a gunshot wound and transported him to Belleville Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 4:17 p.m.
Witnesses at the scene were able to provide police with a description of the suspect's vehicle, which an officer spotted a short time later. A police pursuit ensued, ending when the suspect's vehicle crashed in the 6600 block of Old St. Louis Road. Two individuals fled from the crashed car on foot but were apprehended by officers from multiple local agencies who had established a perimeter. The two suspects were taken into custody and are being held at the Belleville Police Department.
According to the acting Belleville Police Chief, the fatal encounter was not a random act of violence. The suspect and Conrad were known to each other, with the conflict stemming from "previous encounters from past relationship issues." Reports indicate that the suspect, accompanied by a female juvenile from Collinsville, had gone to the shopping center to pick up a food order from a different establishment. Upon recognizing Conrad, an argument broke out between the two men. As the confrontation escalated and Conrad approached the suspect as if a physical fight was about to begin, the suspect produced a handgun and shot him. The investigation into the shooting remains active and ongoing. This was noted as the second homicide investigation launched by Belleville police on that same day.
