In the late evening of March 17, 2026, in a residential neighborhood in South Fulton, a suburb of Atlanta, Georgia, the lives of two teenagers were tragically cut short by gun violence. JMauri Smarr, a 16-year-old male, was fatally shot along with his 14-year-old friend, Jeremiah Carter. Both teenagers were students at Banneker High School. The shooting occurred inside a vehicle in the Cooks Landing subdivision.
When police arrived, they found both Smarr and Carter suffering from gunshot wounds. They were transported to a local hospital where they were pronounced dead.
The investigation into the double homicide quickly began, with South Fulton police working to identify a suspect and a motive. Early in the investigation, it was suggested that the shooting may have stemmed from a prior dispute. Authorities learned that a third individual was present in the vehicle at the time of the shooting but was not considered a suspect. A reward of $10,000 was offered for information leading to an arrest and indictment in the case. The community was left shaken by the violence, with school officials making counselors available to students and staff at Banneker High School to help them cope with the loss of their classmates.
A break in the case came on March 22, 2026, when the South Fulton Police Department's Fugitive Unit arrested a 14-year-old male in connection with the killings. The suspect, identified as Keyshawn Hughes, was taken into custody at a church on Fairburn Road without incident. Despite his age, it was announced that Hughes would be charged as an adult. The charges against him include two counts of felony murder, two counts of aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, and possession of a firearm by a person under the age of 18.
