Policeman Charles Miller, aged 36, was shot and killed on April 8, 1908, while attempting to arrest a burglary suspect at the Pennsylvania Railroad depot in Salem, Ohio. Miller and another officer had gone to the train station to apprehend a member of a gang of four burglars. Upon locating the suspect in one of the passenger cars, Miller placed him under arrest.
