On the evening of February 9, 2026, a burst of gunfire in a parking lot in the 800 block of S. Mattis Avenue in Champaign, Illinois, forever silenced the life of 17-year-old Tariq Porter. The young man was discovered by Champaign police inside a vehicle around 6:45 p.m., suffering from multiple life-threatening gunshot wounds. Emergency responders rendered aid at the scene before he was rushed to a local hospital, but his injuries proved too severe, and he died a short time later.
