On the evening of February 9, 2026, a burst of gunfire in a parking lot in the 800 block of S. Mattis Avenue in Champaign, Illinois, forever silenced the life of 17-year-old Tariq Porter. The young man was discovered by Champaign police inside a vehicle around 6:45 p.m., suffering from multiple life-threatening gunshot wounds. Emergency responders rendered aid at the scene before he was rushed to a local hospital, but his injuries proved too severe, and he died a short time later.
Shortly after Porter was found, at approximately 7 p.m., a second victim, a 19-year-old man from Champaign, arrived at the hospital by private transport with a gunshot wound. He was reported to be in stable condition. The connection between the two victims and the circumstances leading up to the shooting remain under investigation by the Champaign police.
