Reshaud M. "P. Hustle" Biggs Sr., a 33-year-old African American man from Youngstown, Ohio, was tragically shot and killed on July 14, 2019. He was sitting in a parked car on East Lucius Avenue when he was fatally shot around 3 a.m. Biggs was well-known in the community as a rapper and the CEO of "Da Hustle Ent." record label. His death sent shockwaves through Youngstown, a city already grappling with high levels of violence and poverty.
The investigation into Biggs' murder remained open
for several years. In December 2023, Anthony Johnson, a 37-year-old man from Youngstown, was secretly indicted by a Mahoning County grand jury and arrested for the crime. Johnson was charged with aggravated murder, murder, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and drive-by shooting, among other charges. Johnson had a prior criminal record, including a 10-year prison sentence for the 2005 murder of Marilyn Guthrie.
Detective Sgt. Jessica Shields took over the investigation as a cold case and was able to gather enough evidence to secure the indictment. Johnson pleaded not guilty at his arraignment and remains in custody while the investigation continues. Authorities have indicated that more people may be charged as the investigation progresses.
Biggs' death was not an isolated tragedy for his family. Just over two years later, his son, Reshaud Biggs Jr., was also shot and killed in a separate incident at a gas station in Youngstown. The loss of both father and son has been devastating for the Biggs family and the community at large.
The case has drawn significant attention to the ongoing issues of violence and crime in Youngstown, highlighting the need for continued efforts to address these challenges and support affected families.
