Third Street, where officers responded to reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, they discovered a vehicle damaged by bullets, with Miller inside suffering from potentially life-threatening gunshot wounds. Emergency medical aid was administered on the scene before he was transported to a nearby hospital for surgery. Initially listed in stable condition, Miller succumbed to his injuries the following day at 5:15 p.m. on March 17, 2025.
Authorities quickly identified 22-year-old Zaire Herman of Champaign as the suspect in the shooting. According to the investigation, Miller was inside his vehicle when Herman opened fire before fleeing on foot. Officers conducted a sweep of the area and located Herman nearby, leading to his immediate arrest. He faces initial charges including Aggravated Battery with a Firearm, Aggravated Assault, and Unlawful Use of a Weapon. As the investigation continues, additional charges may be filed.
The Champaign Police Department has classified the case as a homicide investigation and continues to canvass the surrounding area for witnesses and video footage that may provide further insights.
