Vicente Mundo, a 20-year-old Hispanic male and University of Illinois student, was tragically killed on January 25, 2015, in Champaign, Illinois. Mundo, who was majoring in statistics, was last seen leaving his apartment after receiving a phone call. His body was discovered days later in a rural area near Tolono, Illinois. Authorities quickly determined that his death was a homicide.
The investigation revealed that Mundo was the victim of a pre-planned armed robbery orchestrated by two individuals, Reginald Scott and Daniel Gonzalez, both 21 years old at the time. Scott and Gonzalez, students at Parkland College, had planned to rob Mundo during a drug deal involving marijuana and cash. The robbery took place in the parking garage of Mundo's apartment complex. During the attempted robbery, Mundo tried to escape, but Scott, who was hiding in the trunk of the car, shot him in the back of the head. Mundo's body was then disposed of in a rural area by the two suspects.
Following the discovery of Mundo's body, both Scott and Gonzalez were arrested and charged with first-degree murder. Reginald Scott, who admitted to firing the fatal shot, was sentenced to 55 years in prison. Daniel Gonzalez, charged as an accomplice, faced a potential sentence ranging from 35 to 75 years.
