A tranquil Sunday evening on a Tennessee highway took a grim turn, leaving a family shattered by an act of sudden violence. Sfenson Simeus, a 26-year-old man, was killed in a shooting on Interstate 65 in Giles County on the night of February 15, 2026. His sister, 23-year-old Elda Simeus, was also wounded in the attack but survived. The siblings were reportedly traveling from Indiana to their home in Lake Worth, Florida, when the deadly encounter occurred.
The incident was initially reported as a car crash around 11:30 p.m. However, upon arrival, Giles County Sheriff's deputies discovered that the crash was a result of the driver, Sfenson Simeus, having been fatally shot. Investigators determined that another motorist had fired more than a dozen shots into their vehicle shortly after the brother and sister had stopped for gas and returned to the interstate, heading southbound.
A significant break in the case came several hours later when a man flagged down a Franklin County Sheriff's deputy on Main Street in Huntland. The man, identified as 31-year-old Aaron Wayne Purvis of Atmore, Alabama, requested to be taken into custody and made alarming statements about his involvement in multiple shootings while traveling through Alabama. While authorities in Alabama could not verify his claims, further investigation linked him to the shooting in Giles County.
Authorities believe one of the firearms recovered from Purvis's vehicle was the weapon used in the attack on the Simeus siblings. As a result, warrants have been filed in Giles County charging Aaron Wayne Purvis with first-degree homicide and attempted first-degree homicide. The investigation into the motive behind the shooting is ongoing.
