On a Sunday afternoon in Nashville, Tennessee, the life of 20-year-old Keylando Powers was abruptly ended. On April 16, 2023, Powers, a Black male, was fatally shot inside a Callywood Court apartment where he had been temporarily staying with the leaseholder's permission. The man charged with his murder, 23-year-old Perry Reed, had previously lived in the same apartment.
That afternoon, Reed stopped by the apartment and, after a few minutes of casual conversation, he suddenly pulled out
a pistol and shot Powers. Following the shooting, Reed fled the scene in his Chevrolet Malibu. His escape was short-lived as he drove around construction barrels on an I-24 exit ramp and ran off the road. Abandoning his vehicle, Reed walked to the nearby Lane Motor Museum. Staff at the museum noticed he appeared to be in distress and was unresponsive to their questions, prompting them to call for an ambulance.
Reed was transported to Centennial Medical Center to be evaluated. In the meantime, police had issued an alert for Reed in connection with the murder investigation and soon learned of his whereabouts at the hospital. He was taken into custody and transported to the Metro Nashville Police Department headquarters, where he declined to be interviewed. Reed was subsequently charged with criminal homicide for the death of Keylando Powers and held without bond. After nearly eight months, during which he was featured on Nashville's 'Top 10 Most Wanted' list, Reed was apprehended out of state on November 6, 2023, and extradited back to Nashville to face a charge of premeditated first-degree murder.
