In the late afternoon of February 16, 2026, a call about a domestic disturbance led to the tragic death of 33-year-old White male Brian Elliott, a dedicated police officer in his hometown of Beech Grove, Indiana. Officer Elliott and a fellow officer arrived at an apartment on Diplomat Court around 6:00 p.m. to the sound of a woman's cries for help. As they approached the apartment door to intervene, a man from inside, later identified as 47-year-old Kenneth Terrell Johnson, opened fire.
Both officers were struck by the gunfire.
The wounded officers were rushed to Eskenazi Hospital. Despite the efforts of medical staff, Officer Elliott succumbed to his injuries a few hours later. His partner was listed in stable condition and was expected to survive. The shooting prompted a massive law enforcement response and a Blue Alert was issued as Johnson fled the scene. A manhunt ensued, and an Indiana State Police SWAT team located and apprehended Johnson later that night in a laundry room of a nearby apartment building.
In the days that followed, the community mourned the loss of Officer Elliott, who was remembered as a beloved husband, son, and a two-year veteran of the Beech Grove Police Department who had previously served with the Marion County Sheriff's Office. Kenneth Johnson was formally charged with a string of felonies, including murder, attempted murder, and criminal confinement with a deadly weapon. Prosecutors announced they would seek a sentence of life without parole, alleging that the aggravating circumstance of Elliott being killed in the line of duty warranted the severe penalty. During Johnson's initial court appearance, he was placed in Officer Elliott's own handcuffs, a symbolic gesture to honor the fallen officer.
