On March 1, 2023, a tragic incident occurred in Coconut Grove, Miami, Florida, involving Jose Manuel González Testino, a 53-year-old Venezuelan businessman, and his 3-year-old son. González Testino shot his son to death before taking his own life.
González Testino was facing significant legal and financial troubles at the time of the incident.
He had pleaded guilty in May 2019 to three charges, including conspiracy to violate the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), violating FCPA regulations, and failing to report foreign bank accounts. These charges were related to his involvement in a bribery scheme where he paid bribes to officials of Venezuela's state-owned energy company, PDVSA, and its subsidiary Citgo Petroleum Corporation, to secure and retain energy and logistics contracts from 2012 to 2018.
As part of his plea agreement, González Testino agreed to forfeit $14 million to the government, with a sentencing hearing scheduled for March 24, 2023, in the Southern District of Texas. He had been released on a $5 million bond after spending nearly a year in federal custody following his arrest at Miami International Airport on July 31, 2018.
González Testino's financial situation was also precarious. He was connected to $50 million in foreign bank accounts, condominiums, a house in the Miami area, apartments in Switzerland and Spain, and a private plane. The condominium where the murder-suicide occurred was owned by his younger brother, Walter Alejandro González, who was facing a foreclosure suit for nearly $3 million on the property.
The incident has been attributed to the mounting personal and financial pressures González Testino was under, although his attorney stated that the legal case had no involvement in the tragic events that unfolded. The case was part of a broader investigation into bribes connected to Venezuelan oil interests, involving several officials from the Venezuelan government.
