Just before sunset, as foot traffic drifted along Southwest 4th Street near 10th Avenue, a car pulled up to the curb where Chaneton stood with another man.
A gunman stepped out and opened fire, the burst of shots sending bystanders scrambling and leaving Chaneton mortally wounded at the scene while the second victim collapsed nearby. Paramedics rushed that man—estimated to be in his 50s or 60s—to Jackson Memorial Hospital in critical condition, while detectives fanned out to secure the block and canvass for witnesses and cameras.
