In the final moments of a Tuesday night in Springfield, Missouri, tragedy struck in the 1900 block of N. Burton. Just before midnight on January 27, 2026, police responded to reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers discovered Marvin Rodriguez Sanchez, a 26-year-old man originally from Mexico, suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency services transported him to a nearby hospital, but his injuries proved fatal, and he died.
His death marked the third homicide investigation in the city for the year 2026.
The investigation into the shooting commenced swiftly. Detectives with the Springfield Police Department worked to piece together the events that led to Sanchez's death. Their efforts quickly led them to identify a suspect in the fatal shooting. With the assistance of the United States Marshals Service Midwest Violent Fugitive Task Force, an arrest was made the following day, on January 28th.
The suspect, identified as Salazar-Montes, was taken into custody and booked into the Greene County Jail. Following the arrest, the Greene County Prosecutor's Office filed formal charges against him, which include second-degree murder and armed criminal action. Salazar-Montes is currently being held without bond. Authorities have stressed that the charges are allegations and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
