In the early morning hours of New Year's Day, 2025, the life of 23-year-old Black male David Franklin was tragically cut short in Springfield, Missouri. Officers from the Springfield Police Department were dispatched to the 1900 block of West Bennett Street at approximately 2:10 a.m. following reports of a shooting. The location, situated near Club Rodeo, became the scene of the city’s first homicide investigation of the year.
Upon their arrival, first responders discovered Franklin suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite the immediate efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Detectives from the Homicide Unit quickly launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident. While processing the scene and gathering evidence, they identified a suspect in connection with the shooting. The investigation led to the arrest of 22-year-old Marquese Gaten, also a resident of Springfield. Authorities took Gaten into custody shortly after the incident as they worked to piece together the events that led to Franklin's death.
Following the arrest, the case was presented to the Greene County Prosecutor's Office for a review of potential charges. Marquese Gaten was initially charged with stealing and tampering with physical evidence related to the felony prosecution. He was held at the Greene County Jail without bond while prosecutors assessed the evidence to determine if additional charges, such as murder, would be warranted. The investigation remained active as law enforcement continued to seek information from the public to ensure a complete understanding of the tragic event.
