Coffier Eugene Day, aged 32, tragically lost his life on September 15, 1973, in Springfield, Missouri. The events leading to his death were both sudden and violent. On that fateful afternoon, Coffier and his father, Claude Day, were at their residence when Robert Wesley Knighton arrived to see Coffier. Shortly after Knighton's arrival, a confrontation ensued, resulting in Knighton shooting both Coffier and his father.
