On New Year's Day in Macon, Georgia, a fatal shooting claimed the life of 27-year-old Ahmad Shahid Roberts. The incident, which marked the city's first homicide of 2026, unfolded in broad daylight just after 3:00 p.m. at a Shell gas station on South Heron Street. When sheriff's deputies arrived at the scene, they discovered Roberts on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound and unresponsive.
Emergency medical services rendered aid at the location before transporting him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead less than an hour later.
The investigation into the shooting led to the swift apprehension of two suspects. Malik Harris, 28, and Desmond Dewayne Hill, 25, both from Macon, were taken into custody by the Bibb County Sheriff's Office on the same day as the incident. The arrests took place at the River Bend Apartments on Mercer University Drive without incident. Both men have since been charged with murder in connection with Roberts' death. Interestingly, Hill was also a victim in the altercation, having sustained a gunshot wound himself. He received treatment at a hospital before being transferred to the Bibb County Jail.
Further investigation revealed that Harris was already a suspect in a separate, unrelated homicide that occurred just nine days prior. He faces an additional murder charge for the December 23rd shooting death of 26-year-old Travon Maurice Harden at the Economy Hotel on Pio Nono Avenue. While authorities have not disclosed a motive for the shooting of Roberts, a witness reported seeing an argument between several men in the gas station parking lot just before two of them drew firearms and began shooting.
